Thermal Duration 2006

Home

Well it seems as if Bob Crane, Gene Sellers & Ben Diss have been taking advantage of some great thermals this flying season.  The Boyz also participated in an Eastern Soaring League OPEN Thermal Duration event in Birdsboro, PA on Saturday, July 8, 2006.  In addition Bob decided to write about the accounts of July 23rd.  Here are the write-ups from "Mr. Golden Pen" Bob Crane....

  • Aug 6, 2006 - approx 2:45pm Sod Farms, Pine Island , NY
The Soaring Experience -  Bob Crane  LSF 186
There are certain events in your life which are filed in our subconscious to be reviewed again and again.  It’s like watching a video that you can rewind.  Today I experienced such an event.

The sky was highlighted with white puffy clouds and that intense blue that only God can create.  Winds were light, 4 -5 mph, the perfect soaring day.  It’s about 2:45 pm at the sod farm and we are watching some hawks thermal in the distance.  There are only three pilots at the field, Rich Behrends, Kurt Zimmerman and myself.

Rich is preparing his Fox sailplane for launch.  Rich has converted the Fox to electric assist.  Rich uses a dolly to cradle the sailplane during the launch.  The plane is ready and Rich is doing some last minute checks with his transmitter.  The electric motor is turned on and the Fox leaps into the sky.  The climb out is fast and furious.  Rich reaches about 500 foot altitude in the blink of an eye (really about 20 seconds) and begins that ever elusive search for a thermal.

Thermals have to be the coolest phenomenon.  Rising currents of air, where your sailplane can hitch a ride.  How many of you have driven down the road and seen a hawk thermaling in the distance and wished you could do that?  I know I have.  While Rich is thermal hunting I’m preparing my Allegro –E for a flight.  I install the battery, turn on the transmitter, wiggle the sticks and off I go to the flight line.

Kurt is resting under my E-Z up, listening to Rich and I discuss thermal activity and sipping iced tea..  One last stick wiggle and I jam the throttle to full.  The AXI motor roars to life, straining the Allegro in my hand.  A quick toss of the plane and off it goes.  Twenty seconds later, I’m at “hunting altitude,” which is about 500 feet.

Rich, who has been flying for about 15 minutes, is encountering some light lift and is really working the Fox, which by the way is an aerobatic sailplane.  Rich has fabricated some wing tips which greatly assists the Fox when thermal hunting.  I walk over and stand by Rich.  We are the only two pilots in the sky.

I start to work some light lift and that dissipates quickly.  Rich is encountering some sink and has to turn the motor on for a short burst to altitude.  After about 5 minutes, I need another “shot of altitude” and the AXI blasts me up to around 500 feet.   Now I encounter some really good lift. Seeing the Allegro transition from the clouds to blue sky is beautiful. Rich and I are now standing shoulder to shoulder, facing opposite directions.

He is working lift to the right of the field and I’m doing the same on the left.  My thermal is really strong and Rich is having some problems with his.  So, like a good neighbor I invite him to join me in “my” thermal.  He is reluctant at first, but finally comes around and “wouldn’t ya know”, sink!

We now both head over to the left and find some light lift and work that.  Now comes the cool part.  The lift intensifies and we are climbing at a good rate.  We’re following the thermal down wind and both of us are chatting up a storm.

“Rich, fly over by me, the lift is stronger.”

“Bob, more to your right, that’s it, you got it.”

We spot two hawks in a thermal and join them.  All 4 of us are working the same thermal.  Rich and I are standing side by side, flying with the hawks.  This is amazing.  This is pure, sharing a thermal in a perfect sky with 2 hawks.  One of us would find better lift and the other pilot would join him.

This is what soaring is all about.  It’s a spiritual experience.   It’s you, your plane, the hawks and the thermal.  You are totally focused on the moment.  It’s like your mind and soul are cleansed.  This to me is the total flying experience.

I have to land as my transmitter battery is getting low.  Rich continues to thermal enjoying this moment in time.  When Rich lands we both agree that this was one of those soaring experiences that we will fly again and again.  I was glad to share it with Rich.

  • July 23, 2006 - squad....ten-hut!!....welcome to your first day of "gilder boot camp."......I am drill Sergeant Diss....I ain't yo mama and I ain't yo daddy....but I am in charge of your life today......tasks will be establishing a landing pattern.....energy management and precision landing and timed rounds.....squad.....prep your planes and get ready for action!!!!

And we love it!!!!!....the "Old Phart squadron" formally recognizes Ben Diss as squadron instructor!!!...in addition to his other tasks like dropping bombs and fetching bass ales!!!!!......Bob is first to launch and flies the pattern....well not really flies but attempts to fly the pattern.....corners are rounded, plane is to slow.....and just about anything else you can think of.....man this guy needs a lot of work....but that's what we're here for......

Ben then proceeds to demonstrate the proper technique for a landing pattern....entry leg, downwind leg, base and final......and plants the icon on the money $$$$.......now Gene's turn....his beautiful bubble dancer vaults into the sky......with some body-english on the sticks gene flies 3 landing patterns before he has to land....oops!!!.....no tape......but he did land on the field!!!

Brian is up next....with his jester......Kurt is still fiddlin' around charging batteries...rummaging thru everybody's lunch etc....assembling his plane......Brian powers the jester off the winch and Ben is talking him thru the pattern....first try ......uck......ahhh but the third pattern is picture perfect and a fine landing......brian is really coming along....and will make a fine pilot!!!!

Ben is up and bam!!!!....this guy does amazing zooms!!!...once again he shows us the correct pattern technique......this scenario goes on and i suspect that we are all getting the hang of it...what the F#$%....bob is thermalling......is there no discipline in this unit!!!!....ahhhh the sergeant is right but what the heck it's a thermal!!!!.....

Kurt is ready to fly.....he's finished everybody's lunch......he hooks up his plane and powers up the winch......the line is straining like a fat guy in a thong!!! (now that's a thought) and Kurt is holding the plane for dear life.....and then pop.....the line breaks just as he releases the plane......the nose is straight up and the plane is falling to earth.....Kurt (Mr slick hands) instantly responds and catches the plane ...that's right catches the plane in mid air....wow!!!!...that was amazing....now if we pop off the winch and catch our plane...we can say...I just did a "Kurt.".....

The line is repaired and off Kurt goes into the wild blue yonder!!!!....is there a song like that??....we proceed thru the day with more drills and timed flights....this is what we really need....Gene and Brian have slight mishaps with their planes and retire to Somerville..

I would just like to comment on lunch.....it has come to everyone's attention that when Brian is eating he tunes out the world....he is like da vinci when sculpting his sandwich.....I have never seen a person sssoooo focused.....he is like poetry in motion......and that's a good thing!!!!

Alex in having some good flight with his free flight and diddilin in his book...heck I can't even understand what he's doin".....back to the action!!!!!.....more timed flights....and then we fun fly...the air is getting pretty lively and Ben launches.....the icon is like the space shuttle on zoom....I've never seen anything like it!!.....

Ben launches into a thermal and is specked out in no time.......he cruises around the sky and hits another thermal....finally Ben decides to land and low and behold starts working some low level lift....and wouldn't ya know....damn....he's going up.....now comes the good part.....

He is thermalling with two hawks and out climbing them.....he then follows one of the hawks to another thermal.....when Ben was later interviewed....by the Old Phart Network....he said that the icon was in "run"mode and he put the nose down and had a hard time catching the hawk...

Now we all know that the Icon is like greased lighting.....that "mother" can haul butt.....nice slim butt not that big nasty stuff.....that suck up the pants....anyway......this is what soaring is all about...not the contest points......not precision landings....but being accepted by a pair of hawks and thermalling with them......this event may happen only once in a pilots life.....and Kurt and i were there with Ben to savor the moment!!!!...nice job Ben!!...oh...by the way.....that was a 41 minute flight!!!

Bob's turn to launch again....he feels aggressive and pumped by Ben's hawk flight.....up goes the bubble dancer......it's tracking straight and he punches the winch for the zoom.....he pops off and is inverted....maybe a little to aggressive????

The plane is suddenly out if control.....no spoilers...no elev...nada.. nothing......the plane is looping and drifting onto the other onion farm...oh no the dreaded "drainage ditch"....bob has first hand knowledge about those guys!!!!

....and down it goes.....bob can see the tail sticking out of the dirt...amongst the onions......Ben lands and off we go to retrieve the plane.....we cut down the road by the fire house and worm our way back.....

We find the field and see the plane and drive to it...we are in Ben's 4x4.....thank god for that.....I go get the plane and guess what!!!....no damage...nothing ....zip...nada.....just no battery!!!!...back we go to the field...I put another receiver battery in and go fly and launch into a hat sucker thermal......talk about karma!!!!

First the stab folds...then this and the plane is still intact!!!!...that's unbelievable.......
Kurt is field repairing a servo....that is changing gears.....and watching Alex while Ben and Bob find the lost aircraft!!!!

Now Kurt launches and starts to work some thermals.......the lift is getting spotty and he's on his approach....his approach mind you.... and he starts to work a low level thermal....when i say low level...I bet his wings brushed the weeds as he was turning.....Kurt is slowly climbing out...one foot at a time.....his intensity is fierce......sweat beads on his brow and under his arms and the back of his knees (oh yuck!!!).....and then he is up there.....7, 800 feet above the ground!!!

What a sense of accomplishment.....and what a great flight......all present agreed that today was a 10+ soaring day......

  • July 8, 2006 - Bob Crane reporting "somewhat" live from the Daniel Boone "ESL soaring contest"....

The "Old Phart squadron" decided to see what an ESL contest is all about.....after hours of meticulous planning (well maybe just a few phone calls) Saturday finally arrives....I'm up and at 'em at 4:15 am and Ben looks at his clock and sees in 3:45am....time to hit the shower and boogie to pick bob up at the hobby hut in Pompton Plains.....

Ben is already in the parking lot when i arrive with trailer in tow.....now this is the way to go to a contest....i loaded my Bubble Dancer in the trailer, chair and all the junk you tote to the field....1st stop, dunkin donuts....i order the "breakfast of champions" 50 munchkins and a diet Pepsi (I'm not a big coffee guy).....Ben gets coffee and a bagel (wrong decision about the bagel) and off we got to pick up gene.....after about 20 minutes of popping munchkins and sucking down diet Pepsi ......i am wired and at about 7000 rpm.....with the tunes "blastin'"....

Ben is somewhat more controlled...but i can see his muscles start to twitch when the caffeine and sugar kick in!!....we arrive at gene's and load his BD up and away we go.....gene is more reserved and only has a few munchkins...not like Ben and i who were pigs!!!

So it's 6am and we got the tunes crankin'...a little U2....kt tunstall...etc...you get the picture....don't forget were still popping munchkins and sucking down diet Pepsi...oh yea...we're wound!!!!.....we arrive at the Daniel Boone homestead and select our spot.....erect (i love that word) our 10' x 10' pop up gazebo....folding table, chairs and unload the BD's and Icon....

A few flights to check trim....and check out the competition and we're ready to go....i notice Tom Keisling and Michael Lachowski check me out....flying the BD and saying....thank god he's flying novice.....yea right!!!!!

Dale Hart is the CD and the contest atmosphere is very relaxed..10 min duration with spot landings for sportsman and expert....5 min duration and spot for novice....Ben Diss flew sportsman and gene and i novice....the novice landing circle was a 50' tape....50 points anywhere in....that was good...

Ben was flying his fully molded icon while gene and bob were flying their scrath built mark drela designed bubble dancer's...interesting note....gene and i has our planes (they are really hot looking) parked side by side and a few pilots came up to us and said that they had seen the pics we posted on rc groups....and that the planes looked better in person!!!....that was kewl.....

I timed for Ben and vice versa....gene timed for Steve from the Boonton club and vice versa.....gene and I really learned a lot about flying, energy management and how to time properly......Steve from the Boonton club reads air like i have never seen anybody read air....anyway...gene started off with a 5:04 flight and 50 point landing....i started off with 3:11 and no landing....Ben was nailing his times and landings also....

Through the contest my skills were improving...turns and winching.....thanks to the help from Ben....who is really a great pilot....anyway, i started hitting my max times and landings too...gene was having a fantastic day until he cracked the fuse in the tail boom area and had to retire from the contest....that really sucked!!!.....i really believe that gene would have walked away with 1st in novice..he was really dialed in.....i had a pop off and had to fly it out......which really sucked and hurt my time.....and landing points!!!

The 7th and final round had Ben Diss in the hunt for a medal (really a great looking plaque on acrylic background)....Ben is really scratching for lift and doing a great job...at around the 7 minute mark he hits a tight light thermal, which he is working like a dog!.....he has to nail his landing to stay in the hunt for a medal.......the pressure is on for Ben....but he is very relaxed on the sticks....

At the 9 minute mark Ben is really up there.....he puts the icon into "run" mode and hauls ass across the sky....doing a loop to burn off some altitude.....40 seconds to go...the icon is like "the coyote trying to catch the road runner" ..really moving out.....Ben starts to get into his landing pattern...i'm counting down, 20 seconds to go.....then 7,6,5,4 3 2 1......Ben lands and nails the spot...Ben's time 9:59 with a 30 point landing.....YES!!!!..what a flight....high fives all around.....

    final results:

Gene Sellers - 3rd place novice

Bob Crane - 2nd place novice

Ben Diss - 2nd place sportsman

A side note: gene and i were the only pilots flying built up planes......everybody else has moldies....i really had a chance to see the new Drela designed "supra" fly....wow what a plane....but i firmly believe that the plane is 10% of the equation and the pilot is 90%...

We really had a fantastic soaring day.....and learned a lot about our bubble dancers....and enjoyed great fellow ship with other people who share our passion!!!

Bob Crane reporting on the Daniel Boone ESL soaring contest.....and "you heard it first from the "Old Phart squadron"".....
